For Hong Kong-based student pilots, the decision of where to undertake flight training involves balancing cost, convenience, regulatory recognition, and practical logistics. While Hong Kong itself has limited training airspace and high operating costs, mainland China offers a range of approved flight schools with modern fleets, structured curricula, and significantly lower per-hour rates. However, training across the border introduces complexities: different Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) regulations, the need for cross-border travel and accommodation, and the eventual conversion of licences to Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (CAD) standards. This article examines the major training schools in mainland China, the logistical considerations for Hong Kong students, and the key factors to weigh when planning a cross-border training path.
